Now on view: Crocker’s Norwich: The Long Nineteenth Century a new permanent exhibit that ties together art and industry in Norwich during what some view as its most successful era. Artists include John Denison Crocker, Alexander Hamilton Emmons, Ozias Dodge, Daniel Wadsworth Coit and John Trumbull.

Greenleaf’s subjects range from animal to landscape and still life. Her unique palette of muted tones render her subject in a soft grayed light. Virginia Greenleaf's mother turned her home into Bee & Thistle Inn giving it the name and place in Old Lyme history. Greenleaf’s art training includes Yale University, Arts Student League, American University and studies with Robert Brackman, Ivan Olinsky, Robert Gates and Gene Davis. Collections include the Ambassadorial Residences in Rome, Paris and 23 other capitals as well as offices of the Ambassador to the United Nations. Artist’s Reception: Oct. 12th, 4pm-6pm.

Through Oct. 20th: Paul Saling (1876-1936): Artist of Lyme. Featuring over forty of Saling’s Connecticut canvasses, including a number of works done in Hamburg Cove while Saling was a member of the famed art colony based nearby in Old Lyme. The Connecticut Impressionist’s paintings are straight-forward representations of local scenes, primarily landscapes of Lyme. First a farmer reliant on his parents, then a decorator and mural painter, Saling, with his precise eye and tempered hand, ascended to the rank of professional artist.

This elegant and engaging exhibition is the first dedicated to the work of the sculptor Bessie Potter Vonnoh since the artist’s lifetime. Like the American Impressionists, Vonnoh embraced subjects drawn from daily life. She became the only sculptor of her generation to focus exclusively on the theme of women and children.
