Gallery directors Ann and Rick Scanlan opened the doors to Sylvan Gallery in July of 2001. Prior to that they lived for almost 20 years in New York City. Ann’s own studies in art began at Miami University in Oxford, OH, where she earned a BFA degree. When she moved to New York City, she enrolled at the Art Students League and spent eight formative years drawing and painting the figure. The class spent the month of June in Stowe, VT, for plein air landscape painting. Rick worked as a commercial photographer in New York, specializing in architectural photography. They moved to Clinton, CT, in 2000 and realized a dream of theirs when they opened Sylvan Gallery. Set in a late nineteenth-century Victorian house, it became the perfect setting for showcasing realistic works of art. In the gallery’s first review it was described as an "oasis of art." |
